Test Code CREAT Creatinine
Useful For
Creatinine measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of renal diseases, in monitoring renal dialysis, and as a calculation basis for measuring other urine analytes.
Synonyms/Keywords
Creatinine, GFR
Specimen Requirements
| Fasting Required | Specimen Type | Preferred Container/Tube | Acceptable Container/Tube | Specimen Volume | Specimen Minimum Volume (allows for 1 repeat) |
Pediatric Minimum Volume (no repeat) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No | Plasma/Serum | Lithium-heparin Plasma Separator (PST), Serum Separator Tube (SST) | Lithium or Sodium-heparin Green Top (GTT), Red Top Tube(RTT) | 1 mL | 0.3 mL | 0.5 mL whole blood |
Collection/Processing Instructions
Samples collected in a GTT or RTT must be removed from cells within one hour for storage or transport. Samples collected in gel barrier tubes must be removed from the primary tube prior to transporting to Marshfield. Do not send the primary collection tube.
Specimen Stability Information
| Specimen Type | Temperature | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Plasma/Serum | Ambient | 7 days |
| Refrigerate | 7 days | |
| Frozen | 2 months |
Test Information
Estimated glomerular filtration rate in mL/min/1.73m2 is based on age, gender, and creatinine in adult patients 18 years and older. Formula does not include a race coefficient.
Formula used is the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI 2021) equation for Adults, recommended by the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology Task Force on Reassessing the Inclusion of Race in Diagnosing Kidney Disease.
eGFRcr= 142 x min(Scr/k, 1)a x max(Scr/k, 1)-1.200 x 0.9938Age x 1.012 [if female]
where:
k = 0.7 (females) or 0.9 (males)
a = -0.241 (female) or -0.302 (male)
Scr = serum creatinine in mg/dL
Age (years)
