Test Code HS12PCR Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1/2 by Rapid PCR

Useful For

Useful for detection and differentiation of HSV I and II DNA in CSF, vesicular fluid, and cellular material from base of lesion (skin, mucosal, urogenital).  This test should not be used for any other source, including ocular.  For ocular specimens order "MISC" for "HSVPV" to Mayo Clinic Laboratories.

Please note this test should not be used to screen asymptomatic patients or as neonatal screening for HSV exposure during delivery.  In suspected cases of congenital herpes, order "MISC" test code:  "VHSVCT-Herpes Simplex Virus Culture with Reflex to HSV Typing" to ARUP Laboratories.

Collection/Processing Instructions

CSF: spinal fluid (CSF) in a sterile, leak-proof container.

Swabs: Vesicular fluid and cellular material from the base of lesion (skin, mucosal, urogenital). Specimens from early stage vesicular lesions rather than ulcerative or crusted lesions should be obtained. Place swabs in transport medium and break off swab at breakpoint of shaft.

For more information on Specimen Collection Media/Swab, see Specimen Transport Pictorial.

CSF Refrigerate 7 days
Frozen 30 days
Swab Refrigerate 7 days

Rejection Criteria

Collected on Wood-Shafted, Cotton, or Calcium Alginate Swabs
Urine and Body Fluids (with the exception of CSF)
Solid Tissue Samples

Test Information

HS12PCR is a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based qualitative in vitro diagnostic test for the direct amplification and detection of HSV-1 and HSV-2 from unprocessed cutaneous and mucocutaneous lesion swab specimens and CSF. Negative results do not preclude HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for treatment or other patient

Interpretations

Negative: No Herpes Simplex Virus DNA detected by Rapid PCR Positives: Herpes simplex type 1 DNA detected or Herpes simplex type 2 DNA detected

All positive HS12PCR (CSF) results are called to the provider.
