Test Code IEPIT Protein-Immunotyping (PEP,GAM,IT) Panel

Useful For

Protein electrophoresis is a useful tool in screening or monitoring patients with protein abnormalities such as hypoproteinemia, hepatodegenerative disease, acute and chronic phase reactions, anemia, polyclonal and monoclonal gammopathies and dysproteinemias.  Quantitative immunoglobulins are useful in detecting or monitoring of monoclonal gammopathies or immune deficiencies.  Immunotyping is useful in determining or ruling out a monoclonal gammopathy.

Synonyms/Keywords

IF Panel (if Immunotyping is required by interpreter), IEP, Immunoelectrophoresis panel - includes protein electrophoresis, immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM and Immunotyping if needed).  IT Panel

Test Components

Protein Electrophoresis (Total Protein, Albumin, Alpha-1, Alpha-2, Beta, and Gamma Globulins), Immunoglobulin IgG, IgA and IgM.  Immunotyping, if required by interpreter (there is an additional charge for Immunotyping).

Test Information

Includes total serum protein, serum protein electrophoresis by Capillary Electrophoresis and quantitative immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA and IgM).  Phenotyping of heavy chains and light chains (kappa and lambda) may also be performed by Immunotyping if required for pathologist/PhD interpretation and will be charged separately.

Interpretations

Increased serum immunoglobulin concentrations occur due to polyclonal or oligoclonal immunoglobulin proliferation in hepatic disease (hepatitis, liver cirrhosis), connective tissue diseases, acute and chronic infections, as well as in the cord blood of neonates with intra uterine and perinatal infections. Elevations of IgG, IgA, or IgM may occur in monoclonal gammopathies such as multiple myeloma (IgG, IgA), macroglobulinemia (IgM), primary systemic amyloidosis, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and related disorders.

Decreased levels are found in patients with primary or secondary immune deficiencies.
