Test Information
A glucose level should also be ordered on the same specimen. Patients on long-term insulin therapy may have anti-insulin antibodies which will falsely lower insulin results. Insulin assay measures exogenous as well as endogenous insulin; measurement of C-peptide may be helpful in differentiating the insulin source and in assessing the cause of hypoglycemic states.
Note: after 48 hours of refrigeration, insulin loses about 10% of its activity.
