Test Information

Products are exposed to a gamma irradiation source to prevent graft-vs-host disease. Irradiation prevents the proliferation of transfused T lymphocytes in the recipient. Any patient identified as requiring irradiated blood products must have a written physician request and a blood bank test request written to have "All Blood Products Irradiated." When irradiation is no longer required, a blood bank test request is required to end-date the Special Need in Transfusion Service. Irradiated Platelets Red Blood Cells are therapeutic products. Send a completed Blood Bank request form specifying the number of units needed to the Blood Bank and mark the irradiation need. Red Blood Cells must be crossmatched prior to release. Allow an additional 10 minutes for irradiation of blood products. A blood type and antibody screen are performed prior to crossmatching the irradiated red cell. Crossmatches are performed before administration of whole blood and all packed red blood cells to determine compatibility between donor cells and recipient plasma. Blood specimen will be held for 72 hours pending crossmatch orders.
