Useful For
Measurements of lactic acid are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of lactic acidosis (abnormally high acidity of the blood).
This test code is specifically for Sepsis Protocol patient testing of arterial lactates. It will order both a baseline arterial lactate (LACA0H) and a 3 hour post baseline lactate (LACA3H).

Collection/Processing Instructions
Note: Test is only orderable at Marshfield Medical Center hospital based laboratories.
Collect Gray Top Tube and transport to the lab promptly after collection.
Centrifuge and remove plasma from the cells within 60 minutes.
Specimen must be drawn WITHOUT a tourniquet and WITHOUT hand clencing.
If the baseline LACA0H is ≤2.0 mmol/L, the LACA3H is discontinued. If the LACA0H is ≥2.1, then the LACA3H is collected and reported.
