This test is useful to help determine if increased CSF proteins are due to increased permeability of the blood – CSF barrier, or due to synthesis of immunoglobulins (primarily IgG) within the Central Nervous System.

Collection/Processing Instructions
Serum sample must be drawn within 24 hours of spinal fluid collection.
Separate serum/plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection.
If serum is not collected within 24 hours of CSF collection, please call Customer Service to discuss the case with a Clinical Chemist.

Test Information
This procedure involves isoelectrofocusing on an agarose gel to fractionate the proteins in the CSF and serum. This is followed by immunofixation with anti-IgG antiserum. The use of enzyme-labeled (peroxidase) anti-IgG antiserum permits detection of IgG oligoclonal banding at increased specificity and sensitivity. The serum is needed to determine if oligoclonal bands are produced only in the Central Nervous System.
