Collection/Processing Instructions

Samples collected in a RTT must be removed from the clot within 1 hour for storage or transport.

 

Samples collected in SST or PST must be removed from the primary tube within 4 hours for transport.

Interferences

Human Anti-Murine Antibodies (HAMA) may develop leading to test interference in patients receiving murine-based agents for chemotherapy or tumor-imaging studies.

Interpretations

Highest levels are seen in the morning 3-4 hours after awakening with levels decreasing 20-40% later in the afternoon. Elevations are seen in pregnancy and postpartum lactation as well as with physical exercise and stress. Large (5-10 fold) increases are usually associated with a prolactin-secreting tumor.
