Test Code RIBOP Ribosomal P Antibody
Useful For
A confirmatory test for the evaluation of patients with signs and symptoms of SLE associated with neuropsychiatric involvement. Ribosomal P antibodies may be detected by very dense fine granular cytoplasmic pattern by ANA IFA.
See the Mixed Connective Tissue Disease Panel Algorithm for suggested testing strategy.

Test Information
Ribosomal P antibodies occur with active SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus), and are seen in association with CNS involvement and cardiolipin antibodies.
This tests aids in the differential diagnosis of neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with SLE.
Since patients with SLE may manifest signs and symptoms of CNS diseases including neuropsychiatric symptoms, the presence of antibodies to ribosome P protein may be useful in the differential diagnosis of such patients. Other causes of CNS symptoms in patients with SLE include thrombosis with or without antibodies to phospholipid antigens and iatrogenic effects from treatment with corticosteroid drugs.
A positive result is consistent with the diagnosis of lupus erythematosus, and may indicate the presence of central nervous system involvement.
Interpretations
A positive results supports the diagnosis of SLE in the case of neuropsychiatric lupus.
