Test Code SENSA Culture, Organism Susceptibility Only, Anaerobic
Synonyms/Keywords
Anaerobic Susceptibility
Specimen Requirements
| Specimen Type | Preferred Container/Tube | Acceptable Container/Tube | Specimen Volume | Specimen Minimum Volume (allows for 1 repeat) |
Pediatric Minimum Volume (no repeat) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pure culture of anaerobic bacterium | Agar plates transported in anaerobic conditions (biobag, anaerobe chamber, etc) |
Anaerobic transport vial
Or Broth (thioglycollate, chopped meat, etc) |
Collection/Processing Instructions
Submit pure culture of organism in anaerobically transported agar plate to keep turn-around-time of identification to a minimum.
Clearly state name (ID) of organism submitted for susceptibility testing. If the identification is not indicated, the organism will be identified at an additional charge. If the organism identification is unknown, order an IDENA and indicate susceptibility testing is desired.
Organisms submitted in an anaerobic transport vial or in an acceptable broth media will require subculture for 48h prior to identification.
Do not send primary plates or plates with mixed cultures. Delay in results will occur.
Specimen Stability Information
| Specimen Type | Temperature | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Agar Plate | After incubation, store at room temp | 5 days |
| Anaerobic Transport Vial | Room temperature | 7 days |
| Broth | Room temperature | 7 days |
Rejection Criteria
Culture plates transported in aerobic conditions
Test Information
Susceptibility testing of anaerobic organisms is generally clinical indicated only when isolated from blood, CSF, joint, or other normally sterile body sites or when there has been a treatment failure. Clients will be consulted when susceptibilities are requested on organisms from sources other than those listed above, before actual testing is initiated.
The antibiotics tested are based on the organism's identification and if applicable, the beta lactamase result.
The following antibiotics are routinely tested on Bacteroides fragilis group, Clostridium sp. NOT perfringens, and beta-lactamase positive Anaerobic Gram Negative Bacillus (i.e. Prevotella, Porphyromonas, Fusobacterium, Bilophila): amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, cefoxitin, clindamycin, imipenem, metronidazole, piperacillin/tazobactam.
The following antibiotics are routinely tested on Clostridium perfringens, non-sporeforming Gram positive bacillus, and beta-lactamase negative Anaerobic Gram Negative Bacillus (i.e. Fusobacterium, Prevotella, Porphyromonas, Bilophila): clindamycin, metrondiazole, penicillin.
Susceptibility testing is not routinely performed on Anaerobic Gram positive cocci or Propionibacterium acnes even if recovered from sterile body sites. Consult Microbiology if susceptibility testing is needed on these isolates.
