Test Code SERRASO Serotonin Release Assay, Unfract Heparin (5508)

Important Note

For information only.  This is not an orderable test. Test is ordered by lab as a reflex test for all positive platelet factor-4 (PF4) tests.

Additional Codes

Versiti Test Code: 5508

Useful For

This test is designed to detect heparin-dependent platelet antibodies in the serum from patients suspected of having Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT).

Synonyms/Keywords

SRA-UFH, SRA-unfractionated heparin, SRA-Porcine Heparin, Serotonin Release Assay, Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia-SRA

Collection/Processing Instructions

This is a confirmatory test for heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). It is not offered as a stand-alone test, but rather is a reflex test for all positive platelet factor-4 (PF4) tests: coded as HITAB.  HITAB has excellent sensitivity and a negative test largely rules out HIT.  Repeat HITAB in a few days may be indicated in situations with a very compelling clinical picture for HIT.  Please refer questions to Marshfield Labs Hematopathologist or Hematology Technical Specialist.

Sample should be spun down and taken off the red cells.  Sample must be received within 7 days of draw date.  Older samples are acceptable if they have been frozen. Submit refrigerated.  If already frozen, send on dry ice.

Frozen @ -20C    14 days

Test Information

Test includes heparin dependent platelet antibody serotonin release assay for unfractionated heparin. This test is used for the detection of heparin-dependent antibodies in heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). Because of its high specificity, the SRA is often useful for confirmation of weak or ‘inconclusive’ results obtained with the highly sensitive PF4/ELISA.
