Test Code TRIG Triglycerides
Useful For
The increased appearance of triglycerides in serum is an important risk factor in the development of arteriosclerosis and myocardial infarction. Secondary hyperlipidemia occurs most frequently in diabetes with an increase seen primarily in the triglyceride content. Other common conditions associated with hypertriglyceridemia include pancreatitis, alcoholism, nephrotic syndrome, and gout. After treatment of the basic disease, the serum lipids usually revert to normal.

Test Information
Test is included in Lipoprotein panel. The presence of chylomicrons are not routinely reported with this test. If this information is needed, write "also chylomicrons" on request form or add as a test comment when the order is placed in the computer.
Interferences
Patient should abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours, as it can falsely increase triglyceride result.
For Regional Centers performing Triglyceride: N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) may interfere with the Siemens Dimension triglyceride assay and cause falsely depressed results.
For patients receiving NAC treatment, venipuncture should occur prior to NAC administration to prevent this interference.
