Test Code URIC Uric Acid
Useful For
Uric acid measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous renal and metabolic disorders, including renal failure, gout, leukemia, psoriasis, starvation or other wasting conditions, and of patients receiving cytotoxic drugs.
Synonyms/Keywords
Uric Acid - Blood
Post-Rasburicase
Specimen Requirements
| Fasting Required | Specimen Type | Preferred Container/Tube | Acceptable Container/Tube | Specimen Volume | Specimen Minimum Volume (allows for 1 repeat) |
Pediatric Minimum Volume (no repeat) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No | Plasma/Serum | Lithium-heparin Plasma Separator (PST), Serum Separator Tube (SST) | Lithium or Sodium-heparin Green Top (GTT), Red Top Tube (RTT) | 1.0 mL | 0.5 mL |
Collection/Processing Instructions
Samples collected in RTT or GTT must be removed from the cells within one hour for storage or transport. Samples collected in gel barrier tubes must be removed from the primary tube prior to transporting to Marshfield. Do not send the primary collection tube.
Uric Acid Post-Rasburicase (URIC) samples from chemotherapy patients receiving the uric acid lowering drug Rasburicase (Elitek) require special handling to avoid falsely low results. Use prechilled Light Green PST tube, and hand-carry to lab in ice-water bath. Centrifuge, remove plasma, and assay immediately.
Specimen Stability Information
| Specimen Type | Temperature | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Plasma/Serum | Ambient | 5 days |
| Refrigerate | 7 days | |
| Frozen | 1 month |
Rejection Criteria
Samples collected with potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride
Test Information
