Test Information

Washed Single Donor Platelets are stored at room temperature and expire 4 hours from the start of the washing process. Washed Red Blood Cells are stored at refrigeration temperature and expire 24 hours from the start of the process.   Washed Platelets and Washed Red Blood Cells are therapeutic products. Orders for washed products must be approved by the Transfusion Service Section head. Send a completed Blood Bank request form specifying the number of units needed to the Blood Bank. Red Blood Cells must be crossmatched prior to release. Allow 2 hours for preparation of washed Platelets. Allow 1 hour for each unit of washed Red Blood Cells. A blood type and antibody screen are performed prior to crossmatching the washed red cell.

Crossmatches are performed before administration of washed red blood cells transfused to patients > 4 months of age to determine compatibility between donor cells and recipient plasma.

Blood specimen will be held for 72 hours pending crossmatch orders.
