Test Code MET Metanephrines, Urine 24 Hour (24 MET)

Useful For

Quantitation of urine normetanephrine (NMN) and metanephrine (MN), collectively referred to as "metanephrines", together with plasma metanephrine levels is useful as the initial screen to aid in the diagnosis and follow-up of catecholamine-producing tumors, pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma. 24-hr urine is highly recommended.

Biochemical Evaluation and Diagnosis of Catecholamine-producing Tumors

Synonyms/Keywords

24 MET, Metanephrine, Normetanephrine; Metanephrine Fractionation

Specimen Requirements

(allows for 1 repeat)
Pediatric Minimum Volume
(no repeat)
No Urine 24 hr urine jug with 7 g sulfamic acid preservative 24 hr urine jug with 20 mL 6N HCl

Collection/Processing Instructions

Indicate collection dates and times.  Total volume must be measured, recorded and included with the test request.

Urine must be preserved for the entire collection. Add acid preservative to collection jug prior to start of collection.

If urine was not collected for a 22-26 hour duration, sample will be rejected and ordering provider notified. The appropriate test to order for samples collected of duration less than 22 hours is "Metanephrine Fractionation, Urine Random" (U MET)(MET-RND).

Test Information

Patient results determined by other methods may not be comparable.

This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Marshfield Labs.  It has not been cleared or approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.  This test is used for clinical purposes.  It should not be regarded as investigational or for research.

Interferences

Patients should be off Buspirone (Buspar") for 72 hours before collection as the drug may cause false elevations of metanephrine.

Patients should be off of Sinemet (Levodopa or Carbidopa), L-Dopa, Aldomet (Methyldopa) and methanamine mandelate (Hiprex, Mandelamine, Urex) for 1 week (minimum of 48 hours) prior to collection.
